How everything started...

A company is only as good as the people who run it - and as trustworthy as they are. Au-fair.com has been set up by Matthias Behrends from Germany and Bindu Adhikari from Nepal.

Matthias is a final year medical student who works since four years with survivors of  domestic violence and sexual abuse in many countries (Europe, Latin Americas, South Asia). He gained experience in international organizations and other companies.

Bindu has been au pair in Germany herself and now prepares for her University studies in Hamburg, Germany. Our team is continually growing to ensure that our services are running smoothly.

Why au pair?

The "au pair" programme was created many years ago in Europe to facilitate cross-cultural exchange for young people by living with a host family in a foreign country to learn their language and culture. That was a more joy-related reason. Today, all countries can send au pairs to some industrialized countries. There are special regulations for au pair visa that make it attractive for everybody who does not have a lot of money or a well-paid job to enter these countries. That has added new aspects to au pair. Exploitation is much more likely to occur then ever before. You need a reliable partner for that - don't do that alone or with dubious middlemen.

All members of our team are dedicated to the security of au pairs in Germany. This is necessary, because...

• we share a world that is characterized by extreme economic inequalities and different perspectives for life - depending on where we are born
• young people from sometimes economically difficult situations are vulnerable to be exploited by agents or middlemen when desiring educational or working perspectives in a European country like Germany

Au-fair.com is a company that does not take any fee from au pairs for any services. Therefore, in an economic surrounding, we comply with our principle that we like to contribute to more social equality and better chances for all young people, no matter from which country.

We move people across the European border. Therefore, we have to apply certain security standards. This is because there is a high pressure from middlemen or agents to take high fees from "applicants", bring them to Europe without any safe perspective. Don't be naive - we ask for documents for serious reasons.
